Holga Contact Sheet & Expierence Post

For my Holga Film I was really struggling with the fact that nothing came out with a clear focus, I like to be able to have the control over what part of the image going to appear as the main subject. The first roll of film I shot was here on campus and when I developed it, all of the images were overlapping. I was not opposed to the idea of this, but figured there must be a way to stop this from occurring. So when I loaded my second roll of fill I decided to change the extra back part that comes with the camera. When I started shooting this roll I had the idea of shooting bicycles around campus, but I double exposed my first shot and then got rained on, so I finished the remaining of this roll of film at home, I was playing around more with abstracting nature around my house (such as our wood holder, a stone wall, a flower sitting on a windowsill, and vines growing on shed). I shot all of these on the cameras closest zoom setting, but was too close to my subject to get any good detail. Still being unhappy with the results from my first 2 rolls of film, I decided that since I had solved the problem of overlapping that I would shoot a third roll and go back to focusing on bicycles. I read more about how the distance settings on the camera worked and went out and shot this roll in the early morning. I really tried to take my time to decide what part of the bicycle I wanted to be in focus. I feel like I had the most success with my third roll of film, once I really slowed down and planned out what I was shooting. I am not completely in love with the Holga; but I also don't hate it, and I would not hesitate to play around with it some more throughout the semester.

Tierney Gearon Film

I enjoyed watching the Tierney Gearon Film in class, I thought it was very inspirational to see that almost all the photographs that she was taking were snapshots of her family. I liked how she really gave you an insight to how she took her photos, and how she involved her family in just about every photograph she took. I thought it was especially interesting that after she had her last baby, she had her mom posing naked with the baby. I think that her way of photographing with her kids in her photographs gives the viewer a sense of how she felt when she was being raised as a child. Gearon puts to use the role of using masks as props in her photographs, which adds an entirely new element to her photographs. One thing I really respect about the way that Tierney photographs, is that she brings her camera with her everywhere she goes. This way she is able to show us the true relationship she has with her mother and with her kids.

If I had to compare Tierney Gearon to another photographer, it would be Sally Mann. Tierney Gearon and Sally Mann both shoot their photographs using their kids to display how their feeling. The two photographers relate in that they both involve their kids naked in their photographs. They are different in that, their photographs invoke a completely different feeling from each other.

Chris Jordan - Cans Seurat 2007

Cans Seurat 2007 - Chris Jordan

My favorite image from the collection of Chris Jordan's photography in the gallery would be Cans Seurat 2007. I like this photograph the best because he uses all different soda cans to compose an image of people in a park looking out onto the water lounging in the sun. This image depicts 106,000 aluminum cans, which is the number of cans used in the US every thirty seconds. I like this piece because when you look at it from far away it looks like it could be a picture of a painting or a very pixelated photograph. But as you get closer to the photograph you see that it is composed of a bunch of tiny soda cans. This image is very similar to his Caps Seurat 2011, which is shown on his website under the Running the Numbers: An American Self-Portrait.
